Situado en el norte de Tanzania, a 120 kilómetros al sureste del Parque Nacional del Lago Manyara, fue creado en 1970. Tras su creación, los Masai fueron expulsados del Parque donde llevaban sus rebaños a pastar . Tiene una extensión de 2.600 Km² y se encuentra a 1.100 metros de altitud sobre el nivel del mar.

Este parque es famoso por contener la mas alta densidad de población de elefantes de todo Tanzania, cuenta con grandes grupos de residentes durante todo el año que forman grupos de hasta 300 ejemplares. Los babuinos son otro de los animales característicos del Parque, que cuenta con grandes grupos de residentes.
En el río Tarangire, no hay cocodrilos, por lo que los únicos grandes predadores que acechan a las grandes manadas que se acercan al río son los leones.-This park is famous for containing the highest density of elephant population throughout Tanzania, with large groups of residents throughout the year to form groups of up to 300 copies. Baboons are one of the characteristic animals of the park, with large groups of residents.In the Tarangire River, no crocodiles, so the only large predators that prey on the great herds that are close to the river are the lions.
Tarangire es un paraíso para los ornitólogos, alberga mas de 550 especies de pájaros, tanto residentes como migratorios. Los pantanos, son el foco de la mayor selección de aves reproductoras en todo el mundo.
La población aves de Tarangire es de las mas variadas de Africa y la razón de ello, es el agua, que no llega a desaparecer aun cuando Serengeti pasa por la estación seca.
The bird population of Tarangire is the most diverse in Africa and the reason is water, which does not disappear even when Serengeti passing through the dry season.
Otra característica del parque es el Baobad, de las ocho clases que existen, la que prolifera es la mayor y mas espectacular. Sus hojas y frutos, son medicinales para los Masai.
Los Masai, dicen de los baobad que como crecieron en lugares prohibidos por Dios, lo hicieron con las raíces hacia arriba.
El parque cuenta con grandes planicies arboladas, en las que además de los baobads, hay árboles de ébano y caoba, higueras y grandes palmeras de sabana, que comparten el paisaje de las riveras con los baobads.
El parque es también famoso por los montículos de las termitas que salpican el paisaje. Those that have been abandoned are often seen to be home to dwarf mongoose . Los que han sido abandonadas a menudo son utilizados como el hogar de la mangosta enana y de algunos reptiles.
