Las romerías, se rmontan a la más remota antiguedad. Los judíos se reunían o iban en peregrinación al lugar en que se hallaba el tabernáculo. Desde el tercer siglo de nuestra era, los cristianos participaron en romerías para visitar los sepulcors de los mártires.

La romería del Rocío es una de las romerías más famosas y multitudinarias que existen. Cuenta con más de 100 hermandades y entre las personas ilustres que han visitado la aldea del Rocío se encuentra el difunto Papa Juan Pablo II el 14 de junio de 1993.
