PAJARO SECRETARIO / SECRETARY BIRD

Es un placer para los sentidos ver a éste ave única en su familia y género andando por la sabana en busca de alimento. Sus movimientos son elegantes y coordinados, como si anduviera constantemente por una pasarela, despistada y llamativa, merece una mención especial en nuestro rincón.

El nombre le viene por su peculiar librea gris y con las patas negras, y con un copete de plumas como llevaban los secretarios británicos de hace siglos. También se piensa que es una mala traducción francesa de su nombre árabe saqr-et-tair (ave cazadora).

Es una de las rapaces más características de toda la fauna africana. Es de gran tamaño, aproximadamente un metro de alzada y de hábitos semiterrestres. Se distingue del resto de rapaces por cazar en el suelo y no desde el aire. Recorre a zancadas los herbazales al acecho de presas que van desde saltamontes a culebras y mamíferos de de pequeño tamaño, a los que ataca golpeándolos con sus largas patas, provistas de cortos dedos y fuertes garras afiladas.

Nacimiento de Ñus / Birth of wildebeest

Temprano una mañana calurosa de febrero, en la época de los nacimientos, buscamos insistentemente para poder asistir a alguno de los nacimientos de los miles de Ñus que cada año pueblan las llanuras de Serengetti. Atisbamos un grupo de hembras con crías de pocos días, proteger en un círculo a una de ellas, que se levanta y se tumba varias veces, inquieta y jadeante.

De repente, vemos aparecer las patas, una de las veces que la hembra se levanta, gritando todo el equipo: es esa! es esa la que va a parir! e instantes después, vemos el retoño cubierto de placenta caer al suelo y empezar a luchar casi de inmediato por levantarse. Emoción y lágrimas en el equipo, una emotiva mañana...

De inmediato, la madre comienza a lamerlo, para  crear el vínculo de unión y estimularle a que se levante, ya que tiene que comenzar a andar nada mas nacer, para seguir al resto de la manada en su migración, de lo contrario, tendrá una muerte segura.
